Abstract
A number of approaches have been used to view the phenomenon of urban growth. Urban growth or urbanization is viewed as an acculturative situation. The concept of space, as it related to Anthropological inquiry, is discussed. The Yoruba of Nigeria and the Serbs of Yugoslavia are viewed in terms of those cultural elements which have spatial connotations. These elements are then examined in terms of changes due to urbanization. It is argued that unless consideration is given to these elements, urban growth will accelerate the decline of traditional cultures and forms.
