Arithmetic--Study and teaching

Abstract

Arithmetic is no longer considered to be strictly a text book and drill type of subject. In this study the author has made an attempt to demonstrate on a small scale that the above statement is well founded. Appreciation is expressed to those educators, parents and pupils whose experiences and opinions on the subject of arithmetic problem solving became the basis for this study. The author wishes to express particular appreciation to Raymond R. Hagelberg of the University of Iowa for the use of some of his materials in conducting this study. The assistance of the author’s wife, professors and faculty advisors in the preparation of the manuscript was of immeasurable value to the writer.
