Abstract
The purpose of the study is to develop criteria for an integrated physical-science course for superior ninth-grade students. A brief outline of the study follows: After having substantiated the need for the study, the investigator presents an historical sketch of the offering of physical-science courses, followed by a survey of research investigations conducted on problems associated with the offering of an integrated physical-science course. The main body of the study consists of developing criteria for the three specific topics, that is, the selection of students, the selection of a text, and the selection of laboratory work. The investigator presents a survey of the literature on the topic and then, on the basis of the and practices found to be of value as cited in the survey and his personal experience in teaching physical-science courses for superior students, recommends criteria for the topic. Each criterion is discussed separately with regard to the reasons for its inclusion. The findings of the study consist of a synthesis of the validated criteria presented in the surveys of the individual topics. Those criteria arc too numerous to be presented in the one-page abstract; however, they are readily available through the library facilities at Northern Illinois University.
