Abstract

ADVANCED ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE WRITING STUDENTS IN AN ACCELERATED COHORT: INFLUENCE OF PEER SUPPORT ON MOTIVATION

Developmental writing programs in higher education have recently been put to task in some states to create program designs that allow developmental writing students to complete college-level writing courses within two semesters. Community college academic ESL programs are areas of developmental writing that have been affected. Developmental writing departments have explored a range of accelerated program types to follow new state mandates. Previous research in accelerated ESL courses focused on varied accelerated course designs, but there are gaps in research on accelerated ESL writing course designs that fit both the developmental writing course and the college-level course in one term using a cohort model. The purpose of this study is to better understand the role of peer support for advanced ESL writing students moving together in an accelerated cohort learning environment. This qualitative case study methodology is based on the social cognitive theory as its framework. The data for this study came from semi structured interviews with five participants of ESL writing students who had completed an accelerated cohort course design including the developmental writing course followed by the college-level writing course. Three major themes were developed from this study: (1) peer support (2) collaborative activities and (3) accelerated learning environment. The findings of this study can inform accelerated course design for developmental ESL students at community colleges.
