Abstract

A CASE STUDY OF INSTRUCTOR EXPERIENCES TEACHING IN THE HYFLEX MODALITY AT A MIDWESTERN COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN A POST-PANDEMIC CONTEXT

Colleges are adding courses in the hyflex modality to their schedules to support the increasing need for students to take flexible paths to course completion. While there is research detailing the outcomes and experiences of students who take these courses, there is a marked scantness of inquiry into the experiences of the instructors who must provide multi-modal instruction and nearly nothing probing the topic in a community college setting. Since hyflex instruction poses a host of challenges, it requires targeted professional development and strong motivation from instructors to take on a task of this magnitude. The purpose of this study is to better understand the experiences of hyflex instructors at community colleges as they are equipped through professional development to teach in this way. This study was informed by Self-Determination Theory relative to instructors’ motivation and employed a heuristic, qualitative, case study methodology. Data was collected via video journals, interviews, and virtual discussion boards with seven hyflex instructors at a large community college in the Midwest. Three themes emerged from the research: (1) Team Pro Flex vs. Team No More Flex; (2) barriers and burnout; (3) pedagogical considerations. The findings of this study can inform administrative leaders on college campuses as they seek to develop successful hyflex teaching programs and corresponding professional development support structures.
