Abstract

Within competitive undergraduate debate, a particular strategy known as the kritik has become increasingly popular. The kritik is born of the deconstructionist thought of philosophers like Michel Foucault. This paper examines the kritik strategy as it is used in real debates from the 2015 Kansas City Kansas Community College National Parliamentary Debate championship tournament. This paper argues that not only does debaters’ use of the kritik strategy not uphold Foucault’s own framework but the kritik strategy itself is also incompatible with the context of competitive debate.
