Abstract

The maternal mortality rate in the United States is among the highest of all industrialized countries. It has also been increasing for over twenty years, and at a disproportionately higher rate for women of various ethnic backgrounds. Non-Hispanic black woman in the United States are four times more likely than non-Hispanic white women to die as a result of childbirth. As nurses, what action can be taken to reduce both the maternal mortality rates as well as the racial gap? Due to the complexity of the problem there is not one answer, however, there have been common themes identified throughout this literature review of peer reviewed articles published within the last five years, which included the importance of: culturally competent communication, understanding social determinants of health, acknowledging health disparities, and self-evaluating possible implicit biases.
