Abstract
This study, “More Than the Disease: A Qualitative Exploration of Mental Health in Cancer Care,” explores the mental health outcomes of cancer survivors after treatment and how their views on survivorship affect their well-being. The main research question was: What mental health challenges do cancer survivors face, and how do their perceptions of survivorship impact their overall well-being? I conducted a focus group with cancer survivors to gather insights into their mental health experiences during and after treatment. Through this process, I found that while each survivor’s experience is unique, a key need is for trusted care and an honest healthcare team that helps them understand the reality of their situation. The study involved obtaining IRB approval, developing questions for the focus group, and organizing and conducting the discussions. I then analyzed the data and now am presenting the findings, highlighting the importance of addressing the mental health needs of cancer survivors in healthcare. If able, I hope to one day share my data with important stake holders to help patients who may face a cancer diagnosis in the future.
