Abstract
This investigation is a qualitative case study of a public elementary school in the midwestern US with a large population of English Learners (ELs). The purpose of the study was to investigate linguistic mediation and classroom practices influencing ELs' identity formation. The findings suggest that ELs assumed different positions in an "identity continuum, "which was embedded in specific literacy practices. The study provides significant educational and research implications in a time of contested politics about immigration in the US and around the world.
