Abstract

The Great Smoky Mountains are riddled with old and forgotten places. The tree canopies shield abandoned buildings, structures can be found with their fireplaces and flooring still in place, just overgrown and cracking, cemeteries of people long since dead, still with flowers at their bases. At night, the woods hold you in place, too dark to venture out and many streets missing a streetlight. It's an old place full of rich and abundant history, it will however keep you in if you let it.

Diego Torres is a Chicago based photographer who leans towards horror-esqe photos inspired by artists like Trevor Henderson and Matt Emmet. These images were shot on film stock made in the Czech Republic that expired in 2018. The idea behind the diptych format is wanting to show the behind the scenes part of analog photography that most people don’t see: the film development process. The film on top is what turns into a larger print in the darkroom, this is how photography has been done for decades that because of digital, has largely been forgotten.
