Abstract
The performance of a Crosstalk-Resistant Adaptive Noise Canceler (CTRANC) previously proposed by other researchers has been scrutinized and found flawed in dealing with various noise orientations. Quantitative data and qualitative analysis reveal the structural origin of the symmetric CTRANC system’s inconsistency in treating noise signals coming from different incident angles. As a solution, an Asymmetric CTRANC (ACTRANC) structure is proposed in this research. Simulations and experiments under real-life conditions are presented to demonstrate ACTRANC’s improvement over the original CTRANC system. Besides handling straightforward crosstalk problems, it is shown that ACTRANC can also be utilized as an adaptive beamformer. The ACTRANC beamforming method does not require non-adaptive subtraction of the inputs to generate a noise reference, and the strict alignment of the targeted source with the sensor array that is required to guarantee that the reference is signal-free. ACTRANC beamforming introduces adaptability in obtaining a signal-free reference; thus it is advantageous over current adaptive beamforming techniques.
