Abstract

This paper evaluates the role of household and individual characteristics on labor force participation to get insights into female labor force participation in India. In addition, the paper evaluates the role of household and individual characteristics in estimating the likelihood of employment in government jobs, permanent jobs, and MGNREGA jobs. The household characteristics that this paper focuses on include the number of elders in the family, children and teens in the household, literacy in the household, household income, and income from other sources. The individual characteristics that this paper focuses on include relation to the head, gender, age and marital status. I employ 5 logit models to assess the likelihood of labor force participation, the likelihood of female labor force participation, likelihood of employment in government jobs, likelihood of employment in permanent jobs and likelihood of MGNREGA jobs. These logit models are employed on India Human Development Survey Panel Data (2005 and 2011-12). The implementation of MGNREGA increased the likelihood of labor force participation by 24% - 25% while it lowered the likelihood of female labor force participation by 72% - 77% compared to their male counterparts. The results also show that the likelihood of MGNREGA jobs increased drastically and benefitted women and married individuals. This paper contributes to the literature on female labor force participation under the MGNREGA program by assessing the complexity of family dynamics playing a role in female labor force participation after the government intervention.
