Abstract
The formation of a deep groove by evaporation on a semi-infinite solid is considered. Evaporation removal of material is achieved by focusing a high- power, highly concentrated Gaussian laser beam of constant wattage (CW laser) onto the surface of the solid. A numerical solution for the temperature profile in the solid with an exponentially decaying source and convective boundary condition is obtained using a 3-D Finite Element Method. The appropriate dimensionless parameters (B[sub i], N[sub k], N[sub e], U) are identified and the temperature on slab is presented in those parameters. The results for the groove depth and shape are presented for a variety of laser and solid parameters.
