Abstract
In "The Holstein in Stanchion Twenty-three," Erin Geoffries returns from work to find a car in her parking space. Her responses to the February blizzard, the apartment manager and the two unruly children she faces on her quest for the return of her stall are set in the context of her desire to fulfill her American Dream. "The Last Dance" tells the story of a young man with great ambitions who is meeting his last obligation before heading for fame and fortune in California. As the story progresses, he begins to come to terms with the small-town culture he is so eager to escape. "What Got Away" features a little girl who goes fishing without permission. Her desire to fish the way grown ups do leads to a struggle with a bit more of the world than she is ready to face.
