Abstract

The secondary school la expected to train young people so they will be prepared to take a position In the world in which they live. In the process of training youth for a station in life it is necessary that certain skills and knowledge be acquired which will enable young people to develop physically, mentally and morally so they will be prepared to take their place in society. To accomplish these goals it is necessary that certain procedures be set up whereby the student is prepared to cope with the outside world, everyday living and to go on to college if he so desires. In the preparation of the individual for these many facets of living, our schools must prepare the students in a variety of fields and areas. One of these areas is biology. This paper is concerned with biology as it is taught n secondary schools thruout the state of Illinois. One of the several disciplines of biology Is genetics. How it is taught in secondary schools of Illinois is also a concern of this paper. The purpose is not to criticize or condemn instructors because of the lack or excess of time and effort spent on genetics, but rather to present the data and facts as they were given to the author and to integrate this information so that interested persons cay see how genetics is presented to the students off eighty-six secondary schools in the state of Illinois.
