Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the needs of persons of retirement age and determine whether pre-retirement programs, based on their needs, would help retired persons make a better adjustment to retirement. Two hundred questionnaires were distributed through four sources. Eighty retirees responded and of these, 10 had participated in a pre-retirement program. The questionnaire was divided into demographic, financial, social, and physical areas of investigation. The Nie Statistical Package for the Social Sciences was used to compute the t-test and Pearson r as part of the analysis of data. Significant correlations were indicated in the social adjustment but since there was not a strong correlation in the financial and physical adjustments, the hypothesis: there is no significant difference in the social, financial and physical adjustment of retired persons who have participated in a pre-retirement program and those who have not participated in a pre-retirement program, was accepted. A larger sample, especially of persons that had participated in pre-retirement programs, would have greater significance in the results of further research.
