Abstract
Though Tennyson’s interest in the theatre was life-long, his interest in the writing of plays did not crystallize until his later years. Not until 1875, after be was 65 years of age, did the first of his plays appear. To the composition of his dramas, therefore, he brought the abilities which had made him one of the great poets of his day: a matured intelligence, an accomplished literary execution, and an imagination rich in color. By their application, he succeeded in producing a series of plays which may be thought of as praiseworthy, even though he did not rise to the heights of a great dramatist.
