Abstract
The synthesis and oxidative doping of polyacetylene is discussed. The synthesis of unsubstituted, α,ω-diphenyl, and α,ω-dimethyl conjugated polyenes is reviewed. The synthesis of conjugated polyenes via Wittig and Horner - Emmons - Wadsworth methodology is also discussed. The dimethyl polyenes containing seven, eight, nine, and ten double bonds were prepared. This was done to test their utility as model compounds for the behavior of polyacetylene during oxidative doping. The results of the syntheses and of the oxidative doping of the polyenes, with antimony pentachloride and ferric chloride solutions, are then described.
