Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of two new chromium complexes, difluorobis(ethylenediamine)chromium(III) tetrafluoroethylenediamine-chromate(III) and its propylenediamine analogue are described. The complex cations, cis-difluorobis(ethylenediamine)chromium(III) and difluorobis(propylenediamine)chromium(III), are isolated from their respective double complexes as iodide salts. Resolution and isolation of the dextrorotatory antipode from the racemic cis-difluorobis-(ethylonediamine)chromium(III) iodide provide verification far the cis configuration of the complex. The color and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum of the difluorobis(propylenediamine)chromium(III) iodide suggest a cis arrangement of the fluoride ligands also. Elemental analysis, ion-exchange experiments, and spectral data support the existence of the tetrafluoroethylenediaminechromate(III) and tetrafluoropropylenediaminechromate(III) anions. Attempts to synthesize tris(ethylenediaraine)chromium(III) fluoride and trans-difluorobis-(ethylenediamine)chromiurm(III) fluoride were unsuccessful.
