Glaciers--Illinois--Kane County; Land use--Illinois--Kane County
Abstract
In the area chosen for study, Blackberry and northern Sugar Grove Townships, Kane County, Illinois, there exists a wide variety of both land use and glacially produced terrain features. The purpose of this study is to describe and evaluate relationships between land use and glacial landforms and deposits. The chief method of analysis was the determination of areal association through the use of map overlays. Superposition of land use and glacial maps facilitated visual comparison of location, size, shape, and orientation of the various features. The degree of correspondence in spatial relations between the two types of phenomena was thus observed. Included in the analysis was a description of glacial events and the resultant pattern of landforms and soils. The study area was divided into landform-deposit divisions. Against the background of the divisions, the areal distribution of land use within the entire study area was examined, and relationships evaluated. Specific sites and patterns selected for detailed study were also analyzed with respect to land use-terrain relationships. The conclusion of the study was an evaluation of the degree of relationship between land use and glacial features. For the study area as a whole, sand and gravel extraction from a former glacial river bed was the only areal association found to be closely correlated. Other types of land use had either moderate or no apparent relationship to glaciation. At a detailed scale, features were selected for the specific purpose of illustrating relationships. Corresponding closely in pattern were a concentration of non-crop land use and prominent glacial landforms. Other land use patterns and sites varied from close to moderate in the degree of relationship with glacial features.
