Abstract
This paper is a study of the accepting attitudes of employees of two large discount chain stores toward severely handicapped students involved in a community based training program. The treatment was repeated exposure to six exceptional needs students. The survey used was A Survey of Attitudes of Potential Community Training Site Staff Toward Persons with Severe Handicaps. A Likert scale with an adjusted mean, an F value (difference), and the probability (significance) was used to assess the accepting attitudes of the employees in both discount chain stores. The components of acceptance that were addressed in the study were: ability, attitude, and approval. The study showed that, in the treatment group, employees showed a significantly more favorable acceptance of attitudes, ability and approval after repeated exposure to severely handicapped students in a community based program. The treatment group showed a significantly less favorable attitude than the control group in one area of attitude.
