Abstract
The attractiveness of any group of buildings, whether they be residential, commercial, or educational, is greatly enhanced by the landscape plantings that surround them. The somewhat depressing effect of a recently developed housing area attests to this fact. The campus at Northern Illinois State College has been acclaimed by many casual observers to be one of the most beautiful in the country. Contributing to that beauty are the cultivated trees and shrubs in the immediate vicinity. The so-called "natural* trees and shrubs in the area have been studied extensively by classes and check lists are available. Unfortunately, such information regarding the cultivated trees and shrubs is not readily available. Thus, it was thought by the author that such a study would be of interest and of value to the school. The purpose of this study Is to compile a check list of the cultivated trees and shrubs of a portion of the Northern Illinois State College Campus. In addition to the check list, a map locating the plantings in the vicinity of the Science Building is being prepared. A further objective of this study is to add specimens of the cultivated trees and shrubs to the herbarium collection.
