Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present reasons for and a study of periodic and terminating fractions in different bases. Basic definitions are stated and a brief history of decimals is given as an introduction. The study shows how to determine if a fraction is periodic or terminating. If the fraction is periodic, a method to predict something about the actual length of the period is given. A method using properties of Farey fractions is developed to indicate the percent of terminating Farey fractions for any base. A study is made to determine the percent of terminating fractions in various bases.
