Abstract

A method for solving a problem in the operational planning for a flexible manufacturing system in a Just-in-time environment is presented. Specifically, the problem addressed is the determination of the optimal number of kanbans and AGYs for an FMS-JIT such that the level of work-in-process inventory is minimized. The problem is formulated in its general form and the relevant factors are discussed. An example is presented, formulated and solved using computer simulation. In addition, the effects of the speed of AGVs and the variability ,of the processing times, as well as those of the demand rates on the optimal work-in-process inventory levels are evaluated.
