Iron-aluminum alloys; Mössbauer spectroscopy

Abstract

We have tested the feasibility of using Mossbauer spectroscopy as an analytical tool for detecting aluminum- iron phases in Al-Fe alloys. The sample consisted of 2.5% at wt. of iron in aluminum that had been cooled from the liquid state at a slow rate. Mossbauer measurements were used to determine the relative amount of iron in each phase. Thus, using the measured relative amounts of iron in each phase, the relative abundances of the aluminum-iron phases present in our sample were estimated.
