Momentum (Mechanics); Cosmic ray muons

Abstract

As part of testing the muon system of the DO collaboration at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, a prototype using cosmic rays has been built. The detector observes high-energy cosmic-ray muons near ground level. The task of the muon system is to measure the muon’s momentum from the deflection caused by the magnetic irons. The magnetic field calculation in the magnetic irons is studied in detail here. The method of measuring the muon’s momentum and the momentum resolution is also discussed. The measurement of the flux of cosmic-ray muons, using the cosmic-ray setup, is presented.
