Abstract

Novel manganese(III) oxidation of several methoxy- substituted styrenes afforded dimerized products. The oxidative dimerization of methoxy-substituted styrenes was examined to explore the synthetic utility and gain insight into the mechanistic aspects of this unique process. The products from each oxidation were throughly characterized. Product distribution varied depending upon the ionization potential of the styrene. This oxidation process delivered several new compounds, of which nine X-ray crystal structures have been determined. The general trend for dimerized products diminished as the ionization potential of the methoxy-substituted styrene increased.
