Abstract

This paper treats the techniques employed and results obtained in measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of the stoichiometric intermetallic compounds Au₈₀V₁₉Fe₁, Au₈₀V₁₅Fe₅, and Au₈₀V₁₁Fe₉ in the temperature range from 60°K to 300°K. A ferromagnetic transition was observed in the Au₈₀V₁₅Fe₅ sample at 70.5±.5°K. Above this temperature all three samples exhibited Curie-Weiss paramagnetism. Values have been obtained for the Curie temperature, the Curie constant, the effective moment, and a temperature-independent contribution to the susceptibility. Elementary theory relevant to the interpretation of magnetic susceptibilities in terms of a localized moment is included.
