Abstract

A Mössbauer study has been designed to measure the ¹⁵¹Eu vibrational motion over the temperature range of 4.2 K to 160. K in the superconducting compound Sn.₇₅Eu.₂₅Mo₆S₈. The spectra at all temperatures consist of an unresolved eight line quadrupole pattern corresponding to the 2⁺ ionic state and an additional single line corresponding to the diamagnetic 3⁺ ionic state of europium. The width, intensity and the shift of the 2⁺ absorption pattern was monitored in an effort to explain the anomalous behavior of europium in this Chevrel Phase superconductor. The data are compared with previous research results in which the ¹¹⁹Sn site was used as a probe in a similar compound.
