Abstract
Separation of pigment fractions of the bacterium Serratia Marcescens, strain 75 was carried out on alumina columns. Elution of pigment fractions with several organic solvents produced seven fractions of the pigment prodigiosin. Molecular weight studies and infrared spectra were used to characterize the pigment fractions. Results indicate that the fractions occur in different amounts, have differing molecular constitutions and have different molecular weights.
