Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate some factors which determine a student's decision to enroll in an art class or classes at Proviso East High School. Need for the Study There has been a growing concern among the art educators at Proviso East High School about factors which influence the taking of art courses by students. It was felt that a study In depth may serve as a guide for the art teachers in evaluating these factors and as an instrument in examining the artistic environment of the community. The results of this study may also indicate areas of influences upon which the high school counselor and art teachers have direct effects. Design of the Study The source of information and data for this investigation was obtained by the use of an inquiry form. The instrument or schedule was first developed from personal interviews with a given number of students enrolled in various art classes. The art students were asked questions concerning the different influences that may have stimulated their enrolling or prolonging their enrollment in art classes. In addition, information was also gathered from related literature. A preliminary outline was then developed listing possible factors which might influence students to enroll in art classes. This outline was then submitted to a number of art teachers, art educators, and lay-people for additional consideration. The final questionnaire was designed to include the general areas of influence.­
