Abstract

Mossbauer measurements have been made in Sn¹¹? + Bi alloys which are capable o£ transforming to the superplastic state. In agreement with a rigid band model, we found that for the solid solution alloys the concentration of bismuth in tin will decrease the isomer shift and consequently s-electron density at the nucleus. The quadrupole splitting observed is proportional to the amount of 5p-like character in the ground state wave function. The increase in quadrupolar coupling changes linearly with the isomer' shift but with the sign of the slope opposite to that expected.
