Abstract

We study, analytically, the edge states in monolayer graphene. We use the Hamiltonian based on the nearest neighbour tight binding approximation. We proceed to Taylor expand the Hamiltonian about the time-reversal invariant M point. Working with this Hamiltonian, we demonstrate the presence of dispersionless edge states for graphene ribbons with zigzag edges. Taking a purely analytical approach to the problem avails us not only a better qualitative understanding, but also gives us a finer control over the system.
