Abstract

Although the reliability literature has developed several techniques for calculating the reliability of coherent binary systems of independent binary components, mathematically these techniques have been found to be very tedious. One goal of this work is to provide a solution to this problem by presenting a BASIC language program for making reliability and structural importance calculations for such systems. Another significant problem in the reliability literature is that although it has provided for the definition of the minimal path sets of a coherent system, it has failed to provide a mathematical or algorithmic method for finding these sets having thus far relied on visual inspection of the structural diagrams of the system. Another goal of this thesis then is to provide an algorithm for finding these sets as well as a BASIC language program for implementing this algorithm.
