Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the auditory comprehension ability of a Broca aphasic by utilization of standardized aphasia examinations. Included were the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (Dunn, 1959), the Minnesota Test for Differential Diagnosis of Aphasia (Schuell, 1965), the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Test (Goodglass and Kaplan, 1972), the Porch Index of Communicative Ability (Porch, 1962), and the Token Test (DeRenzi and Vignolo, 1962). The tests and results were discussed in terms of the linguistic components: phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. The results indicated that the Token Test was most sensitive to the subject's auditory comprehension deficit. The Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Test and the Minnesota Test for Differential Diagnosis of Aphasia test results concurred with the results of the Token Test in that all revealed the subject's specific difficulty with syntactic complexity. The areas of phonology, morphology, and semantics did not seem to interfere with the subject's auditory comprehension.
