Machining--Effect of temperature on; Machining--Measurement

Abstract

The heat generation and subsequent temperature rise during machining process not only affect material properties but also strongly influence the cutting force and tool wear and fracture. The objective of this study is to investigate the temperature rise in the workpiece, tool, and tool-chip interface during orthogonal machining process. A real-time experiment is conducted to measure surface temperature using infrared thermal imaging system and to measure interior temperature of the tool using embedded thermocouples and a computer data acquisition system. A group of tests are carried out to investigate the effect of machining parameters on the temperature rise. A correlation between temperature rise and machining parameters is established.
