Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze and understand as nearly as possible the writing style of John Duke in "The Old King." This composition was sung at the author's masters recital in the Fine Arts Auditorium of Northern Illinois University on March 12, 1965. This study will analyze the composition harmonically, structurally, and rhythmically. The harmonic resources of the composer will be noted. The composition will also be analyzed from the viewpoint of the singer, considering breathing, phrasing, and interpretation.
