Abstract

A computer-aided process-planning system is designed which selects the materials based on properties required of the final part; and for the materials selected, it comes up with different process plans and costs. These plans are based on not only part features, surface finish, dimensions and so forth, but also on materials selected. The system has been built using programming language C. In its current status, the system gives the process plan and cost for two of the most economical materials, but can be extended to more than two materials. The final output is the process sequence, tools, process parameters and costs for both materials. The output is in the form of a process plan format that could be used by manufacturing companies. It also provides a sensitivity analysis and feedback to the design engineering on changes in design to reduce the overall material and processing cost.
