Abstract

The purpose of this project was to explore the causes, effects, and treatments of gestational diabetes and preterm birth. The methods included researching peer reviewed articles from PubMed, CINAHL Complete, and Google Scholar between the years 2010-2020, and using the search terms “gestational diabetes, preterm birth, and effects of gestational diabetes. The major findings were that Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a condition that may yield many consequences for both mother and child. Mothers with GDM have higher instances of a variety of birth complications and babies as a result can experience their own complications due to the disease. The best way to combat this specific disease of pregnancy is through preventative testing measures and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
