Abstract

A low energy (0-3 MeV) thermal-neutron-capture y-ray spectrum from the 177Hf(n,y)J78Hf reaction was obtained using an annihilation-pair spectrometer located at the Argonne in pile CP-5 reactor facility. Energies and intensities of gamma-ray transitions within the excited 178Hf nucleus have been determined. The detection system consisted of a Ge(Li) detector placed in the center of a large annular NaI(Tl) scintillator which is divided into four optically-independent quadrants. Anti-coincidence between the Ge(Li) detector and any one or more quadrants of the NaI(Tl) scintillator produced a spectrum of full energy peaks exhibiting a resolution of 3.1 KeV in the range of 1 MeV to 2 MeV. The present work when coupled with data from average-resonance-neutron-capture in I77Hf suggests a level scheme of 36 levels.
