Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the value of a certain standardized articulation test (SPAT-D) as an efficient tool for targeting the phonological processes found to be most widely noted in phonologically disordered children by school clinicians. Eight subjects, ages 3-5 to 5-5, were assessed using the standard articulation instrument, the Structured Photographic Articulation Test-Dudsberry (SPAT-D), and three whole word transcription phonological tests. Findings are discussed relative to the processes typically utilized by phonologically disordered pre-school and school children, and most frequently targeted for remediation by school clinicians. Results indicated that, focusing on the seven processes most used in remediation by the school clinicians, the same therapy goals would be derived from the Structured Photographic Articulation Test-Dudsberry as were indicated by the more time consuming whole word transcription phonological instruments.
