Algebra--Study and teaching; Prediction of scholastic success

Abstract

This study was undertaken in an attempt to evaluate and possibly improve the method of placement of students in algebra classes at Rochelle Township High School. Relations were studied between algebra grades of ninth grade students and grade placement achieved on the Science Research Associates High School Placement Test. By computing correlation coefficients and regression equations it was determined that algebra grades could not be predicted accurately from results of the High School Placement Test. Neither could a score on the High School Placement Test be selected above which a student could be predicted to complete algebra with passing grades.
