Abstract

The reaction of 56Fe(p, y)57Co has been studied over the energy range 4.65 MeV Ep < 17.4 MeV. The two prominent gamma rays, Yo and Y1, that appear in the capture spectrum correspond to transitions to the ground state and to the first excited state of 57Co at 1.37 MeV. A 90° relative cross section curve taken at 50 KeV intervals shows the giant resonance. The Yo giant resonance is displaced upward from the Y1 giant resonance by an energy approximately equal to the energy of the first excited state of 57Co. The angular distributions have been measured at 0.5 MeV steps over the energy range 6 MeV _< Ep
