Abstract

Home economics is a grade seven required class at Roosevelt Junior High School, Rockford, Illinois. The purpose of this study was to make an evaluation of this required class and to make some comparison of families represented by girls who do elect and do not elect home economics. A check list was developed and administered to four hundred fifteen grade eight and nine girls. Four hypotheses were formulated. These were: Girls who elect home economics la grades eight and nine may be: 1. students of average ability or lower ability than the grade eight and grade nine girls who do not elect home economics. 2. from families larger than the national average size. 3. from homes where the mother is employed outside the home. 4. students who prefer units on clothing construction and food preparation over other units in home economics. A review of the findings indicated that: 1. grade eight and nine girls electing home economics are those girls of average ability or below average ability. 2. girls electing home economics represent the larger than average size family as compared to the 1960 United States census report for family size. 3. slightly more than one-third of the girls come from homes where the mother is employed outside the home. 4. of all the units presented, clothing construction classes ranked highest with always a first or second placement. Foods classes placement ranged from first to fifth position. Good grooming and health units seemed to be slightly preferred over food preparation. 5. grade eight and nine girls evaluate the grade seven home economics class as satisfying; slightly more than fifty per cent would select the course if it were an elective.
