Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of instructional grouping by sex in a regular physical education program upon third grade children. Eighty-three third grade children were divided into three Instructional groups. Group A consisted of forty-six boys and girls. Group B consisted of twenty-one boys and Group C consisted of sixteen girls. All subjects were given the Carpenter Motor Ability Test as a pre-instructional and post-instructional test. The test evaluation involved a weighted equation consisting of the standing broad jump, four pound shot put and body weight which correlates at .82 with a larger battery of tests. During the thirty minute bi-weekly physical education program all children received the same instruction. At the conclusion of the program all pre-instructional and post- instructional scores were totaled and statistically analyzed. It was concluded that within the limitations of this study there was no significant evidence to suggest that separation of instructional groupings by sex affects the performance of third grade students.
