Abstract

Ovarieotomized albino rats were divided into three groups (Group I, estrogen-injected; Group II, progesterone-injected; Group III, sterile water-injected). Seminal plasma was separated from the semen collected by electro-ejaculation of mature male albino rats. The seminal plasma was added to a muscle bath containing a 1 cm segment of the excised uterus from a rat in one of the three experimental groups. These additions caused marked positive contractile responses by the uterus. Fluids from two male accessory sex glands and prostaglandin E1 also were assayed on the uteri. Experimental treatments (heat and alkalinization] on the addenda solutions resulted in partial or total loss of previously contained uterine stimulatory activity by all the assayed solutions, secretions, and fractions. Uterine contractile responses were recorded by an E and M isometric transducer and Physiograph Four pen recorder. All responses were quantitated in regard to frequency, amplitude and duration of contraction, and as activity units, or area under the response curve.
