Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation project is to explore how academic advisors engage in cultural competencies and responsiveness within their advising role at an HSI community college. The case site is an HSI community college located in northern Illinois. The college embraced a new caseload advising and field-of-interest based model in fall 2021. Three major findings were discovered after collecting and analyzing the data. First, the connection between identity and cultural competencies and responsiveness. Second, the large caseloads and workload challenges. Third, the need for intentional and ongoing professional development.
