Abstract
INVESTIGATING THE PERCEPTIONS OF THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE OF SHELTERED INSTRUCTION OBSERVATION PROTOCOL
(SIOP) IN A PK-8TH GRADE DISTRICT
This dissertation explores the perceptions of staff members who have received professional development in Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) and their motivation to implement the strategies learned during the training. There is an increasing number of non-native English speakers in the Illinois education system and a large emphasis on how to best serve this growing population. Providing educators with professional development in SIOP is one strategy many districts utilize to meet this growing population. This dissertation investigated the experiences of several educators who received various levels of professional development in SIOP and their levels of motivation to implement strategies from their professional development. I utilized the self-determination theory framework to examine the subject's feelings of competency, autonomy, and relatedness when experiencing and implementing elements of the SIOP professional development.
